Old tyme love spells

Hoodoo is down-to-earth spell work for practical goals. One of the most practical and common goals out there is love magic.

Now, in modern terms, love magic has taken a very "safe" and "harmless" approach to obtaining your perfect mate. Much of the "harm none" and "no magic without someone's permission" ethics that we've assumed as the pinnacles of morality have simply bled over from modern, new age practices and from wiccan practices. Hoodoo, simply put, is not new age and certainly isn't wicca, and has little concern for their ideas about what is ethical and what isn't. Hoodoo inherits its ethical codes from African magical practices brought to the new world by the slaves and carried on by their descendants. Simply put, if you want to get it, then you work for it. I'm not going to discuss what practices are ethical or aren't - I'm just going to talk about some hoodoo.

Old hoodoo spells to get a lover are largely controlling or manipulative in practice. Many of them consist of MAKING someone fall in love with you, or forcing someone to stay by your side in a relationship. Suffice it to say, these are powerful and old magical workings.

Making a Man Fall in Love with You
This is one of the oldest spells in the book, and it is for ladies to get a man to fall in love with you. It basically consists of feeding your lover your menstrual blood, hidden in food. Typically, it is hidden in coffee, or in tomato sauce to mask the color and scent. For this reason, many men in the south were taught to never accept pasta with sauce or coffee from a woman for fear of being "tricked" into loving her; an interesting social value put in place directly because of hoodoo.

Commonly, women will ask if they can do this if they no longer have a menstrual cycle. The answer is yes - you can use your vaginal fluids or even a bit of your urine - but the effect is not as powerful as menstrual blood. When it comes to personal concerns, it is one of the most powerful substances in a woman's body.

Similarly, if you were a man and wanted to snare a partner, you could use your semen for the same ends.

Keeping Your Spouse Faithful
Here's another old one - and its intent is to keep your man (or woman for that matter) faithful. Take a single strand of your pubic hair, thread it onto a needle and sew it into the fly of your partner's trousers. You could similarly sew it into the waistband of her skirt. It will be secreted there and influence your partner to only be attracted to you and only want to have sex with you.

Upping the Ante - Keeping You on his Mind
If you want to keep your partner faithful and make sure that you are always on his mind, you can take a strand of your pubic hair and put it in the hat band of his hat. Whenever he dons his hat, your sexual appeal will be the one thing on his mind. This spell is a great 1-2 punch with the above spell.

Keeping a Spouse in the Home
This spell was originally used to keep a "wandering husband" in the home, but it can certainly be used on women who like to be out on the town instead of staying by your side. Simply take a pair of their used underwear (panties or boxers/briefs), tie a knot in it and bury it in the backyard of the house. Your partner will be compelled to stay at home by your side and want to spend his time with you.

Of course, with any of these spells, the trick is to pray hard and loud for what you want to accomplish. Call out your lover BY NAME, and command him to love you, stay faithful to you, or stay by your side, and do so in "the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit!" in the true hoodoo fashion.

Mercury (Silver) Dimes

Silver Dimes, also called Mercury Dimes were minted between the years of 1916 and 1945. They were composed of 95% silver / 5% copper and depicted the mythological figure of Liberty donning the phrygian cap (winged cap) indicating freedom of the mind. The winged figure was misinterpreted to be the Roman God Mercury of communication and business. These dimes are a powerful and useful magical curio that is often employed in Hoodoo workings around luck, protection and wealth. It is said that a Mercury Dime from a leap year was the most powerful amulet for gambling luck and if it was from your birth year, even better!

Mercury Dimes for Protection Against Tricks

One of the most effective and powerful amulets against being "poisoned through the feet" (being cursed or hexed by walking through a magical trick someone laid for you) is by wearing a Mercury Dime on a chain around your ankle. Anointing the mercury dime with Fiery Wall of Protection Oil would add to its protective powers. If the dime turns black then it is a warning that someone tried to cross, goofer or hot foot you, and that you have been protected from its influence and warned. It is still a good idea to take an uncrossing bath after discovering that your dime has turned black. The science behind the magic is quite simple. Sulfur is a common component in Crossing Powder, Goofer Dust and Hot Foot Powder, and sulfur turns silver black. Thus, if you have come into contact with sulfur, the dime will tarnish and alert you its presence. If the anklet breaks for any reason, it is said that the dime "took a hit for you" and absorbed the negativity of a powerful curse that someone threw in your tracks.

Mercury Dimes for Gambling Luck

Mercury dimes are a powerful gambling amulet, and are often included in mojo bags carried by gamblers into casinos, or when playing dice. A good gambling mojo bag would include a lucky hand root, a mercury dime and five finger grass. Place this in a red flannel bag, smoke it with a gambling incense blend (like Lucky 777 or Fast Luck) and then feed the mojo with Lucky 777 Oil or Fast Luck Oil. Carry it in your pocket whenever you gamble.

Fiery Protection Oil, Lucky 777 Oil and Fast Luck Oil are all available from conjuredoctor.com

Buying Graveyard Dirt

Ah, Graveyard Dirt ... the magical ingredient that so many authors of modern "magical" books get wrong. Graveyard Dirt is, plain and simply, dirt that is bought from a grave and used in magical workings to employ the assistance and power of a spirit in whatever magical working you are doing.

Some authors have claimed that graveyard dirt is either ground patchouli or ground up mullein. This is a patent falsehood based around their own cultural fear of the dead inherited from European magico-cultural systems. Hoodoo, by contrast, inherited the typically West African value systems where the dead are venerated and treated as magical allies to help fight the good cause for you on the other side.

Graveyard Dirt is used in everything from Love Spells to Crossings. You can sprinkle a mixture of graveyard dirt, sulfur and red pepper in someone's tracks to curse them. You can sprinkle a little graveyard dirt (obtained from the grave of someone who loved you) on someone's hair to make them fall in love with you. You can add graveyard dirt to mojo bags to gain the assistance of a spirit in accomplishing your goal. You can even put some graveyard dirt along with snake sheds and horse hair into someone's food to put "live things in them"! The uses are limitless.

But whose graveyard dirt do you use?

Picking the right grave is important, because you want to choose the right spirit for the right job. Some folks say to buy the graveyard dirt of a soldier's grave because they are strong and know how to take orders. Others say to use the graveyard dirt of a very young child because they are easily manipulated to do your bidding.

I think the important thing to consider is your magical goal and how to accomplish it. You wouldn't want a soldier working to get you your perfect mate. Similarly you wouldn't want to involve your mother's spirit in the cursing of an enemy.

Consider the following examples:
  • Using the graveyard dirt of a lawyer to win a court case
  • Using the graveyard dirt of a detective or police officer to expose a rapist
  • Using the graveyard dirt of a dockworker to get steady employment
  • Using your grandma's graveyard dirt to get your perfect mate
  • Using graveyard dirt from a doctor to help you overcome illness
How to obtain Graveyard Dirt

Graveyard Dirt must be purchased. It is obtained through a contract with the spirit of the person that was buried there. There are just as many techniques for buying graveyard dirt as there are ways of using it, but I will give my own two versions I use here.

Supplies Needed:
  • A trowel
  • A plastic bag
  • A small bottle of whiskey (like the kind they give out on airplanes)
  • A mercury (silver) dime
  • 9 pennies
  • A bouquet of flowers
  • A candle and some way to light it
  • A label or piece of paper and a pen to write with
Process:
I personally like going to cemetery to get graveyard dirt on the dark moon, but any time at night is fine. Have all of your supplies in your plastic bag and the flowers in hand (so that folks think you are just going to visit a grave and clean it up. If anyone asks why you are there at night, tell them that you just got off work and wanted to pay respects to your grandmother on the anniversary of her death. That's enough to shut most folks up.

As I reach the gates of the cemetery, I leave 9 pennies in honor of the spirit who owns and guards all cemeteries. I ask for her permission and protection while I do my work and then I proceed in.

Finding the Live Grave:
I start in the center of the cemetery, walking on foot and hold the lit candle in my hand. I reach out with my thoughts and talk to the spirits of the graveyard telling them the work that I wish to accomplish with my magic and asking who among them will assist me in my work. I wait for a tug leading me in the right direction and I proceed slowly, feeling my way toward the grave that calls to me. When I get there, I place the candle on the grave and sit on top of it and meditate/pray with that spirit for a while explaining my situation. I ask for their permission and assistance and if I get an affirmative, I then begin to buy the dirt.

Buying the Graveyard Dirt:
I tend to take dirt from the head of the grave. Others say to take dirt from the head and foot of the grave. Still others say to take dirt from the right hand side of the grave. If it is a love spell, it will be the grave of someone I love, and I will take it from over their hearts. I cut out a small plug in the sod, dig down about 6 inches into the dirt with my trowel. I put the dirt in my plastic bag. I them drop the silver dime into the hole in payment for the dirt, thanking the spirit and saying "As I have paid you in silver, so shall you pay me in labor!" I then pour the bottle of whiskey into the hole, and I replace the plug of sod to cover the hole. I write down the name, birth and death dates of the grave on a piece of paper or label and affix it to the bag. I then hold the bag of dirt in my hand and pray hard and loud for the spirit of the grave to come with me, that he has work to do, and that it is through his work that his spirit will be elevated and redeemed. I leave the candle to burn on the headstone and I place the flowers at the grave. (I was once instructed to leave the flowers at the neighboring headstone and then discovered that the neighboring headstone was that individual's wife. So it's always good to have flowers on you.)

Leave the grave knowing that you have that spirit's assistance and his power in his grave's dirt. Don't look back. Leave the cemetery and go home by a different route than the one you came by. I usually lay out the dirt on a piece of foil to thoroughly dry out. Once fully dry, I sift the dirt to remove any roots or rocks, and store the dirt in a bag with the name, birth and death dates on it.

Every time I use the dirt, I call the spirit by name and command it to assist me with my work by the contract we made in the cemetery. This is powerful, old-time hoodoo, and it's a trick up your sleeve that not many magic crafters ever expect.

Reversing a Curse

There are several ways to deal with a curse or hex that has been thrown at you. One way is to remove the curse through an uncrossing, another is to set up a protective barrier and cleanse yourself to prevent attacks in the first place, and yet another way is through the use of magical reversals. These are akin to a magical counter-attack; a big middle-finger back at your enemy who has sent attack magic your way.

The concept is really simple: you're invoking retribution and making a person experience the very pain and destruction they sent at you. Because of the reflecting/reversing nature of these workings, common symbols include reflections in mirrors, things written backward, moving backward or doing things in a reversed order.

Reversing Candle Spell
If you find yourself the target of a magical attack, you can send the attack back at the original person using this simple but effective spell. Obtain a reversing jumbo candle. These are a black candle that has a red core (like the one pictured to the right). Using a coffin nail, inscribe the name of your enemy in mirror-writing onto one side of the candle, and on the other side inscribe "Cursed by his/her own hand!" in mirror writing. Dress the candle with a Reversing Oil, place it in a candle holder and burn it on top of a mirror to reflect their actions back at them.

You should complete your work by taking a cleansing bath (like a 9 herb bath or an uncrossing bath), dressing yourself with Fiery Wall of Protection Oil and putting up protections around your home to prevent future attack. Once the candle has burned all the way down, interpret the candle drippings for signs of how well the spell worked. If the mirror breaks, then you should repeat the spell as this means they have protections in place preventing a reflection of the spell at them. You might want to take a different approach if that's the case. The same goes if the candle self-extinguishes.

Ethics of Reversing Spells
Many folks are much more willing to do a Reversing Spell than to do a curse, and yet, they are both attack spells, really. There is an ethical deal that many strike with themselves, where they rationalize their actions because the original curse caster was the one who started the movement and you are merely redirecting it back at them. They don't view it as a counter-curse. I can certainly understand that line of reasoning. In any case, personal cleansings and protections should be used in conjunction with reversals as they certainly aren't warm and fuzzy spells.

Upping the Ante
In my personal practice, I prefer to use Reversals or Curses with an ancestral element. I include graveyard dirt from a soldier, police officer or other "strong" spirit to take them to task and haunt them for their actions in addition to reversing the magic. Many folks never take into account a spirit counterattack when dealing with magic. But the spirits of the dead are my "peeps" and I work with them a lot, after all.
